SARS-CoV-2 (Severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus 2), formerly 2019-nCoV (2019 novel coronavirus, Wuhan seafood market pneumonia virus) is a single-stranded (+) RNA virus belonging to the genus Betacoronavirus[en][6]. The size of the virion is about 50-200 nanometers. Protein modeling based on the decoded virus genome showed that the receptor-binding s-protein of the virus can have a sufficiently high affinity for the human protein angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (APF2, English ACE 2) and use it as an entry point into the cell. At the end of January 2020, two groups in China and the United States independently experimentally demonstrated that APF2 is the receptor for the SARS-CoV virus-2, the same as for the SARS-CoV virus. In March 2020, in a Preprint of the article, it was suggested that the virus uses the protein SP to enter human cells, which interacts with the protein basigin (CD147) of the infected human cell.

Recently, the us national science Foundation has opened funding for a project to study the transfer of coronaviruses between skin and other materials, exposure to UV and sunlight, and the relationship between disease outbreaks and virus concentrations in wastewater.

The project managers-two professors of civil engineering and environmental engineering from Stanford University, Alexandria Boehm and Krista Wigginton-published preliminary results of their observations.

"We do not have a clear understanding of what characteristics of the virus and environmental factors control the stability of the virus in the environment, for example in aerosols and droplets, on surfaces including skin, and in water. When a new virus appears, we can't immediately predict how it will behave in the environment, " the University of Alexandria Boehm said in a press release.

Scientists note that the behavior of viruses in the external environment strongly depends on their structure. There are viruses "wrapped" in layers of lipids that help them avoid collision with the host's immune system (all coronaviruses are of this type), and there are "naked"viruses. The latter, which belongs to the most intestinal pathogens, such as norovirus or rotavirus, are excreted in the feces of humans and spread easily in the water.

The problem of insufficient study of the behavior of coronaviruses in the environment is that scientists believed that "wrapped" viruses live only inside and near organisms and for some time — on open surfaces, and do not spread in water and air. But, as the authors note, reports that the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus was detected in the feces of patients make us wary.

In their work, Boehm and Wigginton consider the potential threats that SARS-CoV-2 poses to water sources. The results of the study showed that numerous barriers and cleaning filters installed in water supply systems work well against viruses similar to SARS-CoV-2.

"It is unlikely that this could be the main route of transmission, but a person could potentially be exposed when interacting with water contaminated with untreated feces," the scientists write.
